Here the historic Courage Brewery looms over Borough Market in Southwark, London. Named for brewer and founder, John courage, its “Take courage” campaign was tongue-in-cheek as breweries advertised beer’s medicinal qualities.
When I made this painting (and consequently some others), it was because the painted letters loomed over Borough Market during the 2017 terror attack. Courage was indeed necessary. A bustling market stripped of safety – where gatherings were weaponized against us – feels familiar in the age of COVID-19. The stochastic nature of the virus has indeed isolated and separated us.
Boris has shut the pubs; so now what? How do we remain together, in being apart? So I invite you: Send someone some courage.
