What is “sending courage”?

I’ll mail one of my Take courage postcards to anyone you’d like with a message or a poem specifically chosen for them. Read more about the project below in “About.”

About sending courage

“Take courage.” Gird your loins. Get pumped. Take the bull by the horns. “Take courage.” Take heart. Don’t give up. “Take courage.” Inoculate yourself.

Here the historic Courage Brewery looms over Borough Market in Southwark, London. Named for brewer and founder, John courage, its “Take courage” campaign was tongue-in-cheek as breweries advertised beer’s medicinal qualities.

When I made this painting (and consequently some others), it was because the painted letters loomed over Borough Market during the 2017 terror attack. Courage was indeed necessary. A bustling market stripped of safety – where gatherings were weaponized against us – feels familiar in the age of COVID-19. The stochastic nature of the virus has indeed isolated and separated us.

Boris has shut the pubs; so now what? How do we remain together, in being apart? So I invite you: Send someone some courage.
