Poems for courage

When you’re sad, studies have shown that listening to sad music helps because you experience empathy from the song: you know someone has felt as you feel. By sending poems—songs’ quieter cousin—I hope to create a whole little community of empathy: the sender, the recipient, me, the poet, maybe even the postal worker.

The poems above have been sent as gifts of courage, will be sent, or are just for myself. Courage, here, is defined as overcoming anxieties, depression, fear. I see courage most often in the mundane: having a hard conversation at work, waking up and getting on with the day, telling a friend you need help, laughing at yourself. Courage is close to coping, but perhaps a bit more active. The poems I am sending feel akin to this mundane courage.
